DAY 1 –Arrival – Lake Maggiore

Arrival at Milan airport. Meet & greet.  Departure by private minibus towards Lake Maggiore. On the way stop for the visit of a private Villa  on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore which owns one  of the largest private botanical gardens of the lake district, covering 17 acres, and with almost one km of lake shore, bordered by pink granite walls carved from local quarries. Started at the beginning of 1900 by the owner, it features an exotic conifer collection, a unique Taxodium grove on the private beach, a 60m long hornbeam, thousands of azaleas and many interesting specimen.  Accommodation at your 4* hotel on the Western shore of Maggiore lake. Dinner and overnight.


DAY 2 –Borromean Islands

Breakfast at your hotel. Meet your English speaking guide and embarkation on the boat to Isola Bella. Visit the baroque palace of the '600 and charming Italian garden which made the island famous in the world.  Built from 1632, the Palace and Gardens of Isola Bella, are the primary attraction of Lake Maggiore. The gardens form an extraordinary, flowered monument laid out over a series of ornate and overlapping terraces, a classic and inimitable example of seventeenth century "Italian garden". At the end the tour goes on to the Isola  Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island). It is occupied almost entirely by an antique, rustic, village, from the tortuous and narrow lanes and preserves the flavour of old age. Lunch at typical restaurant. In the afternoon departure to Isola Madre, the largest of the Borromean Islands. Its gardens, where all manner of peacocks, parrots and pheasants roam freely, are full of rare plants and exotic flowers, helping to create the charm of a tropical land. Isola Madre is particularly famous for its azalea, rhododendron, and camellia blossoms and also for a rarities such as a spectacular Kashmir cypress and palm Jubaeae Spectabilis that reached the venerable age of 125. Go back to Stresa by boat and then by bus to your hotel. Dinner and overnight.


DAY 3 –Villa Taranto Gardens and Brissago islands ( Switzerland)

 Breakfast at your hotel. Departure by private bus to Verbania (western shore of Lake Maggiore) . Meet your English speaking guide and  visit Villa Taranto,  “A beautiful garden does not need to be big, but it should be the realization of one’s dream, even though it is only a couple of square metres large and it is situated on a balcony”. So explained Captain Neil Mc Eacharn, the man who created these marvellous gardens. Many thousands of plants, brought from the far corners of the world, and rare collections, some of them unique in Europe and acclimatized after long laborious efforts, have been arranged with art in this beautiful setting, between the mountains and the lake.  Lunch on your own. In the afternoon departure to Brissago located  in Switzerland. Embarkation on public boat to the Brissago Islands which  have a mild, subtropical climate, and house more than 1,700 species of Mediterranean, South African, American and Oceanic plants. At the end with public boat return in Brissago  and along the western shore of Lake Maggiore back to  your hotel for  dinner and overnight.


DAY 4 –Lake Como  (Villa Carlotta & Villa Balbianello)

Buffet breakfast. Meet your English Speaking guide and departure towards western shore of lake Como. Arrival in Tremezzo and visit the best known, and most visited of the region’s villas. It is Villa Carlotta, built in the late 16th century. It attracts more than 150,000 visitors a year, and with good reason.  Most visitors would say that the house is beautiful, but the gardens are magnificent. Lunch on your own and in the afternoon departure to Lenno e visit the marvellous villa Balbianello (now owned by FAI, Environment Fund closed on Monday and Wednesday). Built for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in the late eighteenth century, the villa stands on a promontory overlooking Lake Como, almost opposite Bellagio. The real masterpiece is the panoramic terraced garden dominated by the elegant loggia with three arches which stands on the highest point of the promontory. Return to your hotel. Dinner and overnight.


DAY 5 –Lake Como ( Villa Monastero & Villa Melzi)

Breakfast at your hotel. Meet your English Speaking guide and departure to Varenna and visit Villa Monastero. A balcony with a breathtaking view over the lake, a lush botanical garden abounding in exotic plants, a house adorned with eclectic decorations and architecture. This is Villa Monastero. Initially an ancient Cistercian  monastery, later a patrician residence, today the villa is a house-museum where both the interior and the gardens are open to visitors. At the end embarkation on ferry boat to Bellagio. Lunch on your own. In the afternoon visit to Villa Melzi, which is within walking distance of the town centre. The architect Luigi Canonica, and the botanist, Luigi Villoresi, both leaders in their respective fields in the early 19th century, designed the English style gardens, enriched with sculptures, in this charming, small lakeside town. At the end way back by public boat to Varenna. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.


DAY 6 - Departure

Buffet breakfast. Transfer to Milan airport and departure.
