Disentis - Schaffhausen
The Rhine Route follows the great river from its source to Basel. The stretch from spectacular Rhine gorge along the river and later on along Lake Constance is especially scenic, leading orchards and castles on its way to the Rhine Falls.

This is a very popular biking route starting point at Disentis following the Rhein River from its source to the German border. Offering spectacular views the route between Disentis and Bad Ragaz the bike trails is more demanding. From the alpine Surselva on it gets easier while continuing through the romantic Rhein canyon biking on undulating terrain heading towards the Buendnerherrschaft. After Bad Ragaz (one of Switzerland's most prestigious spa's) bike along the Rhein dam. En route peak into the delightful miniature village of Werdenberg,right across from Liechtenstein. Leaving the Rhein valley behind you, continue along the lake of Constanz, through picturesque little towns like Rheineck, Castle Arenenberg where Napoleon III spent his childhood to Stein am Rhein (considered one of Switzerland's most picturesque villages) ending the program in Schaffhausen famous for its Rheinfalls.
Day 1 Welcome to Switzerland
Arrival in Disentis. Disentis is dominated by the Benedictine Abbey. The present St. Martin Baroque Abbey-church was built in 1695-1712. Behind the abbey are the buildings of the monastery school. In this area the 4th Swiss language “Romanisch” is spoken. Accommodation and overnight
Day 2 Disentis – Illanz - approx. 30km/19miles; Height diff. 1050feet/320M.
Meet your tourguide at your hotel in Disentis and get ready for your bicycle tour. After a short test ride we follow the (young) Rhein from Disentis to Illanz along the very impressive landscape of the Surselva. It's an undulating area (up and down) mainly on gravel roads passing many little villages. Overnight in Illanz. Route: 19M./30K (15miles/23k gravel)
Day 3 Illanz – Chur - approx. 32km/20miles; Height diff. 656Feet/200M
A most impressive area, the Ruinaulta, the Swiss “Grand Canyon”. Between Illanz and Reichenau discover this natural spectacular area where the two Rhein rivers (Hinterrhein merges with the Vorderrhein) to be watched from a bridge. From here the valley widens giving a different view of the landscape. Overnight in the capital of Graubuenden, Chur.
Day 4 Chur – Vaduz (FL) - approx. 50km/31miles. Height diff. 328feet/100m
From Chur continue on passing most picturesque villages like Malans, Jennis, Maienfeld and Flaesch all famous for their excellent wines. Maienfeld where the author of the famous Heidi book, Johanna Spiry lived. We consider this one of the highlights of the route, with the pleasant bike route along the Rhein, through villages, and passing the castles of Balzers and Vaduz towering over the valley. Overnight in Vaduz, Fuerstentum of Liechtenstein (municipality)
Day 5 Vaduz – Walzenhausen - approx. 55km/35miles, Height diff. 672m
Usually one is only familiar with places along the Autobahn and is not aware what picturesque sights there are hidden along the way such as the smallest village of Switzerland, Werdenberg and its castle. Biking along ancient water canalization’s with a visit to the walled town of Altstaetten and on to the border town of St. Margrethen to Walzenhausen.
Day 6 Walzenhausen – Stein a. Rhein - approx. 72km/45miles, Height diff. 672m
This morning we have the longest route of the program but mostly slightly downhill. Breathtaking views down to the lake. Following the Rhein-delta with many different water birds a very diverse region. Small villages and the castle Arenenberg where Napoleon III spent his childhood. Ending the long way in one of Switzerland's most picturesque towns, Stein am Rhein.
Day 7 Stein a.Rhein – Schaffhausen - approx. 15km/9miles, Height diff. non
Ride the bike to Schaffhausen to see the natural attraction, the Rheinfall, the rapids of the Rhein, among the most impressive of the natural sites of Europe.
End of the tour.
